Once our child isn’t so little anymore and they’ve moved onto
their toddler years clothes aren’t the only thing you’ll need to
replace. One thing you can’t go without or afford to avoid
buying is a car seat made for your toddler. As your child grows
the requirements will slowly change and a new car seat is
needed.

If you’re looking for a car seat for your toddler there are
several great ones to choose from. Although, first it is
important to realize what kind of car seat you need first!

Convertible car seats: Convertible car seats are great because
they are usually used for children up to 4 years of age. They
can be used from the day they’re born until they out-grow their
seat which is usually around 60-70s lbs. When you go this
route, you don’t have to worry about buying an infant car seat
but a booster seat is still needed for the future.

Booster car seats: Booster seats are used later down the road
typically at the age of 5. The weight for these is usually
40-100lbs so your child can definitely get a lot of use with one
of these! These are also cheaper than most convertible car seats
which is nice.

3-in-1 car seats: These are great because they are an infant,
convertible and booster seat all in one. You change the seat
around as your child grows. It is important to pay attention to
the weight and height requirements that way you know when to
adjust your child into their new seat. These are reasonably
priced and can be used from the day they’re born until they no
longer need a car seat!

3-in-1: When it comes to 3-in-1 car seats these are limited.

Do taxi’s have booster seats for children passengers?

Do Chicago taxis have booster seats for children passengers? What if you have two children that require booster seats? I’m thinking about taking my kids downtown via metra and we would need to use a taxi to get around town. Both of my kids would require booster seats though.

No. Cab drivers are not legally or morally required to carry them. They would take too much space in the trunk when it comes to taking people and luggage to the airport. You will have to bring your own.

I have a very nosy friend that always thinks she know what best for(MY) kids, she tells me that my daughter shouldn’t be in a booster seat because the are not safe. My daughter just turned 3 and meets all the requirements for a highback booster seat. Either way I think my friend should raise her kids how she wants and mind her own business but, is she right that I should keep her in the toddler car seat until she weights to much(50 lbs)

definitely check your states laws – i know most states require them to be at least 4 years AND 40lbs to use a booster. but regardless of laws, kids are SAFER in a 5 pt harness…. so im not sure why you would choose to disregard that, just to spite your nosy friend.

most forward facing car seats harness to 65lbs, if not more. personally – safety trumps everything else when it comes to MY kids… so mine will remain harnessed until they reach the height or weight limit to be harnessed. which should take me closer to 6 which is when i’d feel comfortable using a booster.

but youre right – you do what you think is best for your kids. personally – once ive shared the info that i know will keep your kid safest, its out of my hands. tkae my advice (and the advice of many others) or dont. no one can make you keep your kids safer in a harness… that’s up to you.

Why do parents today put 5-8 year olds in booster seats?

I’ve seen 8 year olds in booster seats and it’s ridiculous. Why do you treat 8 year olds like giant babies or toddlers? Granted I’m very young (24 and born in late 1986) but I think it’s ridiculous how children are treated right now. They don’t even play on the fun playground equipment I had as a kid.

It’s the law and the fines are pretty high if you don’t have them in one. I personally hate them too but hey I grew up at a time when hoping from front seat to back seat while car was moving was normal behavior and seat belts were there but never used.

how do you keep kids from escaping vehicle booster seats?

does anybody know of any product that will go over the adjustable chest buckle on booster seats that will keep the buckle from moving down and also keep the child from undoing buckle?

Talk to the child about the importance of wearing a seatbelt and what could happen without it. If you notice them undoing it stop the car- "NO!- We cannot go anywhere until you put it on." They should be able to understand that it’s not okay.
As for products- speak to the manufacturer/ stockists of your particular seat, and they might have a product they recommended.

We’re pregnant with our second, and im thinking, having two full sized car seats in the back of the car isnt going to leave much room, so are these seats okay with a 5 point harness? All these new laws are confusing! (im in Australia)

And if so, how do they work? how do you connect the harness on?
Forgot to add – he’s about 17kgs.

In my state, the law is pretty lax and allows for a booster (high backed or backless) at any point after 40 pounds (18-19kgs, yes?), which means that it would be legally okay for a 3 year old to use one, but not necessarily safe. It looks like the the new Australian child restraint laws require children to be in a 5 point harness up to 4 years old, which means that any type of booster won’t work. If it doesn’t come with the harness, it doesn’t work with a harness.

Don’t get too stuck on "boosters take up less room than full sized car seats" because that isn’t really true. If you compare base widths, I think you’ll find that the booster you linked to and a regular harnessed high-backed booster are about the same width; they’re all going to have to fit in the same space and none should be much wider than that. They are all designed to fit in the "sit your bum here and buckle up" space.

Any suggestions on a portable booster baby seat for stadium seats?

We plan to take our baby to his first MLB game in Sept: he’ll be 7 mos old then. Does anyone have any experience taking their baby to a game & if so, what kind of booster seat works well in those stadium seats? Obviously, something lightweight & easy to carry would be ideal. We haven’t bought a booster yet & wanted to get one that would work everywhere. Thanks!

when my mom and dad came to my games in college they would bring my cousin whos 1 year old in a lightweight mattel carrier… little expensive but great way to put in the fold up chairs at baseball stadium!

Why do children under 8 have to sit in booster seats while in a car?

I was wondering why children under 8 or some weight are required to sit in a booster seat while riding in a car?

Because standard vehicle safety devices are not designed for smaller people, they are designed for adults (seatbelts, airbags, etc).

The booster seat secures the child and makes the built in safety features less dangerous (or more effective) for children.

Can you point me to booster seats with five-point harnesses?

I swear I saw a couple of these on-line, but I can’t remember exactly what I Googled for and I am now, rather inexplicably, having a hard time finding them. High-back boosters with a five-point belt — these exist, right? Thinking of getting a new seat for a new car, for a 3yo.

Any reviews/comments on these…? How many years of use is it realistic to expect from such a seat?

Excellent price and it’s been very sturdy. We’ve used it for our son since he was 3 and this is what we will be getting our daughter when she outgrows her convertible 5-point harness seat.

Sure you can spend $200+ on a fancy booster seat… or you can get the safety benefits needed and not break the bank.
